Overijssel is one of the most beautiful canoeing provinces in the Netherlands. A growing number of outdoor companies in the area offer canoes for hire or guided tours. The water board warns that the water near weirs, but also in various other places, can be dangerous. A useful tool for finding canoe routes is Kanoweb

Cycling, mountain biking and running

The Toeristenweg between Holten and Nijverdal is particularly famous among cyclists. This is due to its smooth surface and bends, combined with the hilly landscape and views. There are climbs in both directions. And then there is the Motieweg with a gradient of 10%. The Grote Koningsbelt (south) with 8% is also a tough one. Go on a weekday or on a Saturday or Sunday morning when it is quiet. Good to know: it is at its most beautiful at the end of summer. The rolling landscape is then covered with a purple blanket of flowering heather.

Parking is free at the three visitor centres: at the Buitencentrum in Nijverdal, at the Natuurmuseum in Holten and at Erve De Pas in Haarle. Behind the rolling hills, terraces and welcoming restaurants regularly appear. 
Most mountain bikers are familiar with the ATB routes on the Sallandse Heuvelrug. The routes in Rijssen and Hellendoorn have been in the top 10 of MTBroutes.nl for years. If you want a challenge, you can even combine the routes. There are flat paths with climbs where beginners can learn the sport without too much trouble. In addition, there are plenty of artificial obstacles where professional bikers can show off their skills. Visit Oost also describes six more beautiful routes.
